Graveside services for Price Snelson, 92, of Lilburn, formerly of Washington, were held Tuesday, January 19, 2010, in Resthaven Cemetery, Washington, with Rev. Allen Danner officiating. He died Monday, January 18.
Mr. Snelson was a native of Wilkes County and was the son of the late Charlie and Frosic Kennedy Snelson. He was a truck driver for Pet Milk Company and served in the U.S. Army during World War II. He was a member of the Washington Chapel and was the widower of Ossie “Jackie” Moon Snelson.
Survivors include two sons and daughters-in-law, Elaine and Mack Bramlett, and Olivia and Dennis Cirillo, all of Lilburn; four grandchildren, Renie Scoggins, Michael Dennis Cirillo, and Keira Renne’ Ramirez; and one great-grandchild, Rio Miguel Ramirez.

Funeral services for Thomas Wheatley, 74, of Rayle were held Monday, January 18, 2010, in the Rehoboth Baptist Church, Metasville, with Rev. Steve Rayner officiating. Interment was in the church cemetery. He died Friday, January 15.
Mr. Wheatley was a native of Wilkes County and the son of the late Leonard Bostic and Maude Thornton Wheatley. He was selfemployed and served his country in the U.S. Army National Guard. He was a member of Rehoboth Baptist Church where he had served as a deacon for over 50 years and assisted in teaching Sunday School for over 25 years.
Survivors include his wife of over 48 years, Christine Sherrer Wheatley; two sons and a daughter-in-law, Tommy and Gloria Wheatley of Rayle, and Mike Wheatley, Rayle; two brothers, Stanley Wheatley and Manuel Wheatley, Washington; two sisters, Talitha Hopkins, Washington, and Irene Raffini, Anderson, S.C.; grandchildren, Richard and Lisa McAvoy, and Chris McAvoy; great-grandchildren, Amy and Taylor McAvoy.

John Veazey Wynne Jr.
Funeral services for John Veazey Wynne Jr., 92, of Crawfordville, were held Friday, January 8, 2010, at the Powelton Baptist Church with Rev. Jeff Bishop and Rev. James Dotson officiating. Burial was in the Powelton Cemetery. He died Monday, January 4, at the Bolingreen Health and Rehabilitation Center.
Mr. Wynne was a native and lifelong resident of Taliaferro County and the son of the late John Veazey Wynne and Mary Lizzie Sturdivant Wynne. He was a 1940 graduate of the University of Georgia and taught school in Nashville, Lakeland, and Crawfordville. He was a U.S. Army veteran of World War II and retired from the U.S. Army Reserves as a colonel. He was the director of the Taliaferro County Welfare Department for several years and retired as District Supervisor for the Georgia Department of Agriculture in 1985 after 20 years of service. He served as chairman of the Taliaferro County Welfare Board, president of the CSRA Development Authority, a member of the Taliaferro County Farm Bureau, president of the Powelton Homecoming Committee, member and past president of the Crawfordville Kiwanis Club, and past district commander of the American Legion Post. He was a member of the Crawfordville Baptist Church Brotherhood, the Taliaferro County Hunting Club, and Powelton Baptist Church.
Survivors include two daughters and sons-in-law, Judith W. and Ray Pearson of Macon, and Lucille W. and Randy Hough of Peachtree City; a sister Dorothy Wynne Gibbs, Social Circle; four grandchildren, Ray Cannon Pearson Jr., Richard Wynne Pearson, John Sadler Young, and Katherine McIntyre Young; one great-grandson; two step-grandchildren; and three stepgreat grandchildren.

Guy Yancey Moore
Graveside services for Guy Yancey “Yank” Moore, 86, of Brunswick, were held Saturday, January 9, 2010, at the Phillips Mill Baptist Church Cemetery with Rev. Randy Lamb officiating. He died Wednesday, January 6, at the Southeast Georgia Health System in Brunswick.
Mr. Moore was a native of Wilkes County and was the son of the late Mark Allen Moore and Essie Sue West Moore. He was the widower of Sadie Kirkland Moore. He was a World War II veteran. While serving his country in the U.S. Army he earned and was awarded the American Service Medal, W-W II Victory Medal, Asiatic Pacific Service Medal with two Bronze Stars, Good Conduct Medal, Philippine Liberation Ribbon with one Bronze Star, and a Purple Heart. He was personal assistant to Secretary of State Ben Fortson for several years and retired as foreman of grounds and beaches for the Jekyll Island Authority after 36 years.
Survivors include three sons and daughters-in-law, Guy Yancey ‘Yank’ Jr. and Penny Moore, Benjamin David ‘Buddy’ and Terry Moore, and Charles ‘Barry’ and Vicki Moore, all of Brunswick; two sisters, Mary Jean Grant of Thomson, and Celeste W. Funeral services for Joseph Alexander Cagle, 64, of Washington will be held Saturday, December 19, 2009, at the First Baptist Church, Washington, with Rev. Klay Aspinwall officiating. Interment will be in Resthaven Cemetery, Washington. He died December 15.
Mr. Cagle was a native of Waynesville, N.C., and the son of the late Pearson Floyd and Willie Mae Fie Cagle. He had made his home in Wilkes County for approximately 40 years. and was retired from the masonry industry and cattle farming. He was of the Baptist faith.
Survivors include a brother, Charles McKinley Cagle, Maggie Valley, N.C.; a sister, Mary Ann Whorley, North Carolina; and his step-brother with whom he lived, Sammy Miller.
The family will receive friends at the church on Saturday one hour prior to the service.

Kermit Mell Hocutt Funeral services for Kermit Mell Hocutt, 60, of Washington were held Tuesday, January 5, 2010, at the First Baptist Church, Washington, with Rev. Albert Huyck and Rev. Chris Townsend officiating. Interment was in the Crawfordville City Cemetery. He died Sunday morning, January 3, 2010, in Wills Memorial Hospital. Mr. Hocutt was a native of Wilkes County and the son of the late James E. Hocutt and Lucy Lunceford Hocutt, and Whitney Ward. He was a member and non-active deacon of the First Baptist Church, Washington. For many years he worked as an active volunteer for the church preschool program, preschool Sunday School Department, Mission Friends, and conducted the Children’s Church and sermon until 2003. He was also a faithful and energetic participant in all other churchwide events. He attended Alexander Stephens Institute, Crawfordville, and graduated from Greene County High School, Greensboro. Following graduation he entered the U.S. Army and received training as a medical corpsman and was based in Korea until 1971. After returning to the United States he attended cosmetology school in Augusta and was a parttime hairdresser in Washington while also working as a medical assistant for Doctors Edward and Eugene Pollock until 1985. Since that time he had operated Kermit’s Salon. Mr. Hocutt was involved with many community programs including Washington-Wilkes Comprehensive High School Band Boosters, Washington Little Theater, Friends of the Mary Willis Library, Washington-Wilkes Historical Foundation, and the Washington- Wilkes Tiger Club. Many classes of primary school children received his special creations through the years. He and his wife Cynthia were professional caterers for many years. Mr. Hocutt was an accomplished gardener, baker, and self-taught cake decorator, and floral designer and he generously shared the fruits of his labor with his many friends and neighbors. Currently he was a member of the Washingiton-Wilkes Arts Foundation. Survivors include his son and daughter-in-law, Kermit Wayne and Blake Hassett Hocutt, of Charlotte, N.C.; two grandchildren, Madeline Grace and Thomas Edward Hocutt, Charlotte; and other close relatives, including Calvin Fort of Warrenton; Barbara Lunceford Griffith, Crawfordville; Debra Griffith Brown, Watkinsville; Darrell Griffith, Atlanta; David Griffith, Sandersville; Carol Lunceford Saddow, Titusville, Fla.; June Lunceford Griffin, Forest Park, Arizona; and Jerry Lunceford, Monte Vista, Colorado. Asa William Bennett
Graveside services for Asa William “Bill” Bennett, 67, of Washington, were held Tuesday, December 29, 2009, at Resthaven Cemetery, Washington, followed by a memorial service at the Episcopal Church of the Mediator at 2:00 p.m. He died Thursday, December 24, at Emory Hospital in Atlanta.
Mr. Bennett was a native of Wilkes County and was the son of the late Asa Monroe Bennett and Annie Leila Wells Bennett of Washington. He was the grandson of the late Mr. and Mrs. Nathan Robert Bennett of Washington and the late Mr. and Mrs. Thomas Corley Wells of Valdosta. He was a member and former senior warden of the Episcopal Church of the Mediator in Washington.
Mr. Bennett graduated from Washington-Wilkes High School in 1960 where he participated in school clubs and academic organizations and was a member of the Tiger football team. He attended Oxford College of Emory University before transferring to the University of Georgia where he received a bachelor’s degree in History in 1964. After teaching history at Oxford of Emory for two years, he returned to Washington-Wilkes to found the Bennett Implement Company and to farm. He was a member and served a term as president of the Georgia Farm Equipment Association. In 1985, he became a certified public accountant and established the CPA firm of Bennett, Davidson, and Associates. He was a member of the American Association of Certified Public Accountants in addition to sitting on the board of directors for United Community Banks and Life of the South Insurance Company.
Very active in community affairs, Bennett was past treasurer of the Washington-Wilkes Humane Shelter Association and the Washington- Wilkes Arts Foundation. He was a former member of the Mary Willis Library Board and chairman of the North Alexander School Association.
Survivors include his wife of 46 years, Evelyn Coulter Bennett of Washington; a daughter, Katherine Elise Bennett of Columbus, Ohio; and two sisters, Joyce Bennett Crouch of Amherst, Massachusetts, and Mary Ann Bennett Hawkins of Morrow.

Graveside services for Troy M. Chafin, 75, of Rayle were held Thursday, December 24, 2009, at Rock United Methodist Church Cemetery, Rayle, with Rev. Donnie Berry officiating. He died Tuesday, December 22, in the Veterans Administration Hospital, Augusta.
Mr. Chafin was a native of Wilkes County and had lived here all his life. He was the son of the late Miles and Willie Pearl Gresham Chafin. He served in the United States Army and was a truck driver.

Grady Leslie Patterson Jr.
Long-serving former State Treasurer Grady L. Patterson Jr. was celebrated Thursday as a dedicated public servant of impeccable integrity, who for more than 35 years fiercely guarded South Carolina's financial reputation.
"He would not take home a pencil to use because it was state property," said the Rev. Agnes W. Norfleet, who eulogized Patterson at Columbia's Shandon Presbyterian Church.
Patterson also was saluted as a steadfast witness of his Christian faith, whose example guided the lives of his children, grandchildren and others.

Grady Patterson
The longtime state treasurer was buried Thursday.

Education: Attended Clemson University; received bachelor's and law degrees from the University of South Carolina
Political experience: Patterson was elected state treasurer after the 1966 death of four-term state Treasurer Jefferson Bates. Patterson went on to serve seven terms. He was defeated in 1994 but re-elected in 1998. He was treasurer until 2006, when he was defeated by Republican Thomas Ravenel, who subsequently resigned in a drug scandal.
Military service: Patterson was a fighter pilot in World War II, leaving active duty in 1946. He was recalled to active duty in the Korean War and during the Berlin crisis. Patterson was active in the S.C. Air National Guard for 40 years, earning the rank of lieutenant general.
"He was a treasure," said Norfleet. "Grady Patterson has shown how awe and humility before the Lord is our treasure."
Patterson, 85, who died Monday, was first elected state treasurer in 1966 and served under eight S.C. governors - four Democrats and four Republicans.
Three governors - Republicans James Edwards and Mark Sanford and Democrat Jim Hodges - attended Thursday's services, seated across the aisle from the family along with a string of other dignitaries, including state representatives and constitutional officers.
Edwards, who from 1975 to 1979 was the state's first Republican governor since Reconstruction, said Democrat Patterson told him upon taking office, "I'm here to help you any way I can over the next four years," which he did.
As the state wrestled with budget shortfalls at that time, much as it is now, Edwards said Patterson told him the state needed a "rainy day" fund to help get through tough times, then proceeded to make it happen.
"Our AAA credit rating is testament to his conservative principles," Edwards said.
Hodges, governor from 1999 to 2003, brought a little levity to the services when he told the congregation, "Grady's being called home is proof that even God needs (good) financial advice once in a while."
Hodges applauded Patterson for his devotion to maintaining a healthy state retirement system, and his role in bringing about a $1 billion public school construction bond in 1999, the first of its kind since the 1950s.
Hodges reminded listeners of a bumper sticker Patterson used that read, "Character Counts." Hodges said discipline, elegance, integrity, vision and loyalty were among Patterson's hallmarks.
"He was with you in good times," Hodges said. "He was with you in bad times."
BURIAL WITH HONORS
Patterson's flag-draped coffin was rolled into a full sanctuary that was dressed for Advent, the Christian faith's season of holy waiting and Christmas.
Led by Marjorie, his wife of 58 years, Patterson's family marched in behind his body, some of the youngest in quieted tears.
In prayer, Norfleet asked those who mourned Patterson would be upheld by God's peace.
"Give thanks that Grady's season of declining health is over," she said, adding Patterson, a World War II fighter pilot and Air National Guard member who loved to fly, was "flying now where he knew he would be."
A banner on the church wall near a lighted Christmas tree quoted from a hymn: "For all the saints who from their labor rest, Alleluia, Alleluia."

COLUMBIA, SC (WIS) - Former state treasurer Grady Patterson was laid to rest on Thursday as he was honored for his 36 years holding the office.
The retired Air Force general died Monday at 85.
The funeral was a who's who of state politicians and dignitaries who knew Patterson through his years as the treasurer.
But politics was put aside for just one day as friends and family remember the man who dedicated so much to the state.
Former Gov. Jim Hodges had plenty to say about Patterson's work.
"I mentioned at the funeral that his motto was 'character counts.' And if there was ever someone of high quality character, it was Grady Patterson," said Hodges. "He was dependable, honest, hardworking, all of the characteristics you admire, Grady Patterson embodied those."
Not only was Patterson remembered for his civil service, he was also remembered as a family man.
Patterson's grandson, Gray, remembers his grandfather setting high expectations, and sharing love to match.
"He was a grandfather that always expected us to do our best and always had unconditional love and support for everything we did," said Gray.
Jonathan Patterson said his grandfather leaves a simple but important legacy.
"The legacy he'll leave is that we need to remember what's good, do right by people and always do what's best for everybody," said Jonathan.
The years of service as treasurer can easily be added up, but the number of lives touched by Grady Patterson is a number no one will ever know.

Mrs. Thorne was born on December 19, 1913, in Warrenton, NC to the late Elizabeth Burwell and William Norwood Boyd. She was married for over 60 years to the late Samuel Thomas Thorne, Jr. She was preceded in death by her sisters, Lucy Boyd Meade and Mariam Boyd Tisdale Orgain; her brother, Henry Armistead Boyd.
Beloved by her family, she is survived by her two daughters, Burwell T. Anthony and husband, F. Patt Anthony, and Agnes T. Harvin and husband, George M. Harvin; five grandchildren, Robert Thorne Anthony and wife, Jennifer, Elizabeth Boyd Anthony Long and husband, Josh, Lucy Reeves Anthony Sprange and husband, Brent, Samuel Thorne Harvin, and Paul Rose Harvin; six great-grandchildren. Mrs. Thorne was a graduate of Peace College and Duke University. After college, she taught school for several years in Mocksville and Warrenton, NC.
She was a faithful community volunteer, devoted friend, and avid gardener. She was a member of West Market Street Methodist Church, The Junior League of Greensboro, The Wednesday Literary Club, The National Society of the Colonial Dames of America, and The Greensboro Garden Club. Reid Crow
Graveside services for Marshall Reid Crow, 86, of Decatur, were held Saturday, November 21, 2009, in The Decatur City Cemetery. He died Monday, November 16.
Mr. Crow was a native of Wilkes County and was the son of the late James J. and Mary Isabelle Logan Crow. He was the widower of Elizabeth "Libba" Dillard Crow. Mr. Crow enlisted in the military service shortly after Japan's attack on Pearl Harbor on December 7, 1941. He trained as an aircraft engineer and gunner and became a member of the Army 8th Air Corps, 95th Bomber Group, 412th Air Squadron, in early 1943. He was a B-17 engineer and top turret gunner and flew 23 missions over Europe in a B-17 before being shot down over Germany. The entire crew survived and were prisoners of war for the next 19 months in German Stalag 17b which at its peak held 4000 Americans. After enduring 19 months of unbelievable hardships and near death, the crew survived and was liberated by American troops. Upon his return home, he and his brother, the late Lt. Col. U.S. Air Force WWII James A. Crow, established Collegiate Press, a printing business in downtown Atlanta and successfully operated it until retirement in 1991. Both men grew up on Depot Street in Washington-Wilkes.
Mr. Crow was a beloved and respected resident of the Emory/ Decatur community and was an active member of the First Baptist Church of Decatur. He was a member of the Dixie Wing-a branch of the Commemorative Air Force.
Survivors include four nieces, Tricia Crow Lehmann, Dunwoody; Kathy Crow Jones, Snellville; Martha Harrington Ingram, Jasper; and Carol Mansfield Cornelius, Atlanta; and a nephew, Bobby Dillard of Raleigh, N.C.

Mr. Sutton was a native of Wilkes County and was the son of the late Clement E. Sutton and Berta Green Sutton. He was married to the late Willena Zachry Sutton for 66 years. He was a graduate of Emory University in Atlanta, Class of 1934, where he was a member of the Phi Delta Theta fraternity. He began his professional career with the Georgia Power Company in Atlanta and later was associated with the General Electric Company for over 40 years. Graveside services for William R. (W.R.) Callaway, 92, of Athens, were held September 30, 2009, at Evergreen Memorial Park with Rev. Wiley Carney officiating. He died Monday, September 28, at his home.
Mr. Callaway was a native of Wilkes County, the son of the late Ruby Perkins and William R. Callaway. He was the widower of Gloria Hilda Harn Callaway. He served for many years in the U.S. Marine Corps and the U.S. Army, serving with distinction during World War II in both the European and Pacific theaters. Following his military service he worked for many years for Beechnut & Tetley Tea, selling products across Northeast Georgia. He had a passion for music and during this time formed a band, "Bill Callaway and The Counts," playing for many dances in and around Athens. He played the trombone and was the band's lead singer. He composed a number of songs and made many records during the late 1950s.
Survivors include four children, Connie Callaway Scroggs, Linda Callaway Nutter, Betty Callaway, and William R. Callaway III; seven grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; and a sister, Emily Callaway MacDonald.

Dorothy Brewton Slaton, 94, of Jacksonville, Fla., formerly of Washington, died October 18, 2009.
She was the oldest of three children born to Dr. J.H. and Lucille Rippard Brewton. While completing her master's degree in Athens, she rented a room from Mrs. William A. Slaton, met, fell in love with, and married her son, William Slaton Jr. Mrs. Slaton was a school teacher and was the second in charge of the Wilkes County School Board under Turner Callaway.
In 1954, the Slatons moved to Waycross where they made their home until they moved to Jacksonville, Fla. Mrs. Slaton's father-inlaw was instrumental in bringing electricity to Washington by sending a letter to President Roosevelt. He later owned the home where the Washington Historic Museum is now located.
Mrs. Slaton was preceded in death by her husband in 1997 and is survived by their only son, William A. Slaton III of Jacksonville.

Mr. Albea was a native and lifelong resident of Wilkes County and was the son of the late Charles W. and Clara Bailey Albea. He served in the National Guard and was a member of Beulah Baptist Church. He was the proprietor of the Highway 17 Used Cars in Tignall.
Survivors include a sister, Phyllis Reese, Grovetown; a brother, Clint Albea, Washington; and a stepgrandson, Trey Osborne.

Funeral services for CW2 (Ret.) Roy Lee Burns, 75, of Washington will be held Thursday, August 27, 2009, at the Mt. Nebo Baptist Church. He died Thursday, August 23.
Mr. Burns was a native of Wilkes County and the son of the late Robert L. Burns and Annie Bell Tolbert. He joined the United States Army in January 1954. During his military career he served as an operator in the Special Forces (Green Beret), serving two tours of duty in Vietnam. His primary duty was with the Army Corps of Engineers. While working in the Criminal Investigation Division in the U.S. Army in Fort Gordon, Mr. Burns' military duties culminated in his service as a Military Intelligence Officer specializing in criminal investigation. After serving his country, Burns began serving God. He was called to the ministry in 1981 and served as pastor for several churches, including Mt. Calvary Baptist in Elberton, Macedonia Baptist and the New Sutton Baptist Church in Washington.
Survivors include his wife of 53 years, Addie L. Burns of Washington; five sons and their wives, CSM (Ret.) Roy L. Burns Jr., and his wife Angie of Newnan, Mayor Willie Burns and his wife Barbara of Washington; Major (Ret.) David Burns and wife Grace of Greenville, S.C., Daniel and Joyce Burns of San Antonio, Tex., and 1SG (Ret.) Lynn Burns and Desiree of Sierra Vista, Ariz; two daughters and their husbands, Nedra and Perry Snow of Sugar Hill, and SSG (Ret.) Mr. McAvoy was a native of Wilkes County and the son of the late Jacob and Irene McCarthy McAvoy. He was the widower of Mildred Nunn McAvoy, who died July 31, 2009. He attended Courtground School. Mrs. Skinner was a native of St. Louis, Missouri, and the daughter of the late Charles Irvin Smith and Lillian McCleskey Smith. She was the widow of Enoch Bell Garrett and Jacob Phinizy Skinner. She was a retired paraprofessional with the Wilkes County School System. She was a member of the Washington First Baptist Church where she was a member of the Vannie Spratlin Sunday School Class. She was a member of the Woman's Club, the Kettle Creek Chapter Daughters of the American Revolution, and Friends of the Mary Willis Library.
Survivors include a son and daughter-in-law, Robert (Bobby) Irvin and Ellamarie "Ree" Hudson Garrett, Sandersville; a daughter, Marian Garrett Confer, LaHerradura, Spain; two granddaughters, Susan Garrett Cato, Sandersville, and Elizabeth Hudson Garrett, Venice, California; and a sister, Elaine Smith Sliver, Phoenix, Arizona.

Mrs. Wright was a native of Wilkes County and was the daughter of the late Samuel Hinton Dillard and Susie Smith Dillard. She was the widow of John Goode Wright. She was a beloved retired school teacher, having taught in McDuffie County, and for 33 years in Wilkes County.

A service of celebration for the life of Marcia Crawford Standard, 74, of Nashville, Tenn., was held Wednesday, October 14, 2009, at Calvary Methodist Church in Nashville. Graveside services were held at Mt. Hope Cemetery, Nashville. An additional memorial service will be held at 11 a.m. in Atlanta on Saturday, October 17, at Peachtree Road United Methodist Church. She died Saturday, October 10, at St. Thomas Alive Hospice after a prolonged illness.
Mrs. Standard was a native of Atlanta, and was the daughter of Logan and Bess Crawford of Atlanta. She was the widow of Dr. Henry Cooper (Mickey) Standard Jr., a native of Wilkes County. A son, Dr. Henry Cooper Standard III, is also deceased. Mrs. Standard attended Emory University in the first class of women admitted to the university. While there, as sweetheart of Chi Phi, she met and later married the fraternity's president, Henry "Mickey" Standard. After the untimely death of her husband, she obtained her Masters of School Administration, while teaching full time, and then becoming the director of admissions at The Lovett School in Atlanta. While at Lovett, she became the principal of the Lower School and founded the Pre- School. She was an active member of the National Council of Teachers of Mathematics and served on the board of the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools. She founded The Math Set LLC in Atlanta and Nashville which specializes in precisely tailoring math education to children's individual learning styles. She served on the board of Peachtree Road Methodist Church where she taught Bible studies and devoted herself to Children's Christian Education. She was fond of music and an accomplished pianist, a great cook and hostess, a loving mother and grandmother.

He was employed with the United States Postal Service for 35 years and loved fishing and cooking barbecue.

Funeral services for Joe Lewis Rucker, 62, of Washington were held Friday, October 23, 2009, at the Mulberry Baptist Church, Sandtown Road, Washington, with Rev. Robert Crawford and Rev. Mr. Rucker was a native of Wilkes County and the son of Albert Rucker and the late Annie Lee Rucker of Washington. He was a graduate of Central High School, Washington. He served in the U.S. Marine Corps during the Vietnam War. After being wounded twice during two separate tours of duty, he was granted an honorable discharge as a Corporal E-4 and received two Purple Heart awards. He had worked as a printer technician for a newspaper; a mechanic/engineer for a mineral plant; and attended Athens Technical School where he received his certificate as a residential heating, air-conditioning refrigeration and electrical mechanic. He later worked for Georgia Power and Sears. He worked for the U.S. Postal Service in Washington for 27 years.
Rucker was a faithful member of the Mulberry Baptist Church where he served as chairman of the deacon board. He was a former Worshipful Master of the Shiloh Masonic Lodge #63 of Washington.
Survivors include his wife, Alfreedia Rucker of Washington; two sons, Martin Rucker of Fairburn and Shawn Rucker of Crawfordville; his father, Albert (Elmira) Rucker of Washington; a granddaughter, Ra'Shelle Rucker; a grandson, Derrick Rucker; two sisters, Annie Kate Cullars and Mamie Mills; and two brothers, Albert Rucker Jr. and Johnny Rucker.

She was a retired secretary-treasurer for the Wilkes County Farm Bureau. Mrs. Hodgson was a member of the Washington Presbyterian Church where she served as an Elder and taught Sunday School for 40 years. She served as president of the Presbyterian Women of the State of Georgia from 1962 until 1965, and president of the Presbyterian Women from 1957 to 1959. She was a member of the Washington-Wilkes Garden Club and of the Friends of the Library. She was named 1987 Wilkes County Citizen of the Year, and was named in Who's Who among American Women.
Survivors include a sister, Miss Elizabeth Reynolds of Washington; and a brother and sister-in-law, James A. and Rosemary Reynolds of Washington.

She was a retired secretary-treasurer for the Wilkes County Farm Bureau. Mrs. Hodgson was a member of the Washington Presbyterian Church where she served as an Elder and taught Sunday School for 40 years. She served as president of the Presbyterian Women of the State of Georgia from 1962 until 1965, and president of the Presbyterian Women from 1957 to 1959. She was a member of the Washington-Wilkes Garden Club and of the Friends of the Library. She was named 1987 Wilkes County Citizen of the Year, and was named in Who's Who among American Women.
Survivors include a sister, Miss Elizabeth Reynolds of Washington; and a brother and sister-in-law, James A. and Rosemary Reynolds of Washington.

Funeral services for John Burdette Smith, 85, of S. Smyrna Church Rd., Washington, were held Wednesday, February 14, 2007, at the Smyrna United Methodist Church with Dr. Napp Granade officiating. Burial was in the church cemetery. He died Sunday, February 11, in Wills Memorial Hospital, Washington.
Mr. Smith was a native of Washington County and had lived in Wilkes County for most of his life. He was the son of the late Wilbur Smith and Edna Burdette Smith. Funeral services for George Leonard Wheatley, 85, of Metasville were held Sunday, February 24, 2008, at Rehoboth Baptist Church, Metasville, with Rev. Dale Fincher and Rev. Steve Rayner officiating. Interment was in the church cemetery. He died Thursday, February 21, in the University Hospital, Augusta.
Mr. Wheatley was a native of Wilkes County and the son of the late Leonard B. Wheatley and Maude Thornton Wheatley. He was a farmer and a past member of the Wilkes County Young Farmers and Wilkes County Cattlemen's Association. He was a former director of the Washington Loan and Banking Company, Rayle EMC, and the Oglethorpe Power Corporation. Some of the awards he earned over the years include Woodman of the World Conservation Award; Future Farmers of America Honorary Chapter Farmer; Wilkes County Cattlemen's Commercial Beef Cattle Producer; Broad River Soil and Water District Farm Family of the Year; and Wilkes County Cattlemen's Environmental Stewardship Award. He served in the United States Navy during World War II and was a member of the Rehoboth Baptist Church. In his early years, he was a logger and in land clearing and pond building with Wheatley Brothers. His latter years were spent enjoying his grandchildren great-grandchildren, and raising beef cattle.
Survivors include his wife of 64 years, Sara Hopkins Wheatley; sons and daughters-in-law, George Douglas and Sandra Wheatley, Leonard Herman and Amelia Wheatley, and JoAnn Wheatley; a daughter and son-in-law, Claunette and Perry Morgan; three brothers, Stanley Wheatley, Thomas Wheatley, and Manual Wheatley; two sisters, Talitha Hopkins and Irene Raffini;nine grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren; two stepgrandchildren; and four step-greatgrandchildren.

Olin L. Lindsey
Mr. Lindsey was born August 12, 1916, in Henry County. He received his Bachelor of Science from the University of Georgia in 1939. He was an Army veteran of World War II, serving in the Pacific as a radar officer in the Signal Corps. He was a wellknown pioneer in three professions in Georgia - in forest protection as the first forest ranger in Wilkes County; in Georgia Farm Bureau Federation; and in Blue Cross/Blue Shield. While living in Columbus, he retired as Vice- President of Marketing for Blue Cross after holding that position for 22 years. He served as a deacon of Hilton Terrace Baptist Church in Columbus for many years. He taught Sunday School at the First Baptist Church, Washington, well into his 80s. He was a Kiwanian most of his adult life. He served as president of the Hazelhurst and Washington Kiwanis Clubs and was Lt. Governor for Kiwanis, Southeast Georgia. He treasured his family, and will be remembered for his love of God, devotion to his family, humble spirit, and service to others.
Survivors include his wife of 65 years, Elizabeth Granade Lindsey of Washington; two daughters and sonsin law, Betty and Herman Sifford of Baconton, and Carol Lindsey and Louis Harris of Roswell; a son and daughter-in-law, William Granade and Maureen Lindsey of Powder Springs; a brother, Raburn Lindsey of Covington; seven grandchildren, Stan Thornton, Lindsey Davis, Louis Harris Jr., Katherine McEvoy, Michael Lindsey, John Lindsey, and Christine Lindsey; and three great-grandchildren, Laura Davis, Stuart Davis, and Brooks McEvoy.

Mrs. Lindsey was born in Atlanta on October 29, 1917, and was the daughter of the late Joseph Webster and Sarah Elizabeth Camp Granade. She died five days after her husband, Olin L. Lindsey. They had been married for 65 years. Mrs. Lindsey grew up in Wilkes County and graduated from Georgia State College for Women in Milledgeville in 1942. She was an innovative and skilled educator during the "baby boom" years and retired from teaching at Johnson Elementary School in Columbus. She attended Hilton Terrace Baptist Church in Columbus and was active in many areas of church life. Retirement years were spent in Washington-Wilkes at her childhood home where she became involved in numerous civic and church activities. She was a gifted Sunday School teacher and continued to teach well into her 80s. She delighted friends and family with her gift for storytelling and her sense of humor.
Survivors include two daughters and sons-in-law, Betty and Herman Sifford of Baconton, and Carol Lindsey and Louise Harris of Roswell; a son and daughter-in-law, William Granade and Maureen Lindsey of Powder Springs; a sister, Vivian Granade Wickersham of Washington; seven grandchildren, Stan Thornton, Lindsey Davis, Louis Harris Jr., Katherine McEvoy, Michael Lindsey, John Lindsey, and Christine Lindsey; and three greatgrandchildren, Laura Davis, Stuart Davis, and Brooks McEvoy.

Virginia Peniston
Mrs. Peniston was born in Montezuma, and was the daughter of the late McLendon Sherwood DeVaughn and Anne Elizabeth Sims DeVaughn. Her grandparents were James Elijah DeVaughn and Sarah Virginia McLendon DeVaughn of Montezuma, and Marshall Mercer Sims and Mary Miranda Robert of "The Cedars" in Washington- Wilkes. On her first trip away from family and friends after graduating from high school she attended the Julliard School of Music in New York City. After her marriage to Thomas Jackson Peniston in 1928, they lived in Atlanta for 40 years. While living in Atlanta she was a charter member of the First Piano Duet Club of Atlanta, the 1904 Study Club, Four Seasons Garden Club, and was an officer for several years in the Rabun Gap Nacoochee Guild. She enjoyed genealogy and was a member of the James Edward Oglethorpe Daughters of American Colonists, Daughters of Colonial Wars, the Huguenot Society, State Regent of the Colonial Dames XVII Century, Descendants Knights of the Garter, Magna Charta Dames, and past Regent of Joseph Habersham Chapter DAR. After her husband's death in 1964, she moved back to Washington to help her mother, "Sister Bess," until her death in 1975. She was a member of the Kettle Creek Chapter DAR and the Iris Garden Club. She was named Washington Rotary Club Citizen of the Year for 1977-78 for serving as chairman of the Wilkes County Beautification Campaign which won a national award. She moved to Atlanta in 2000 to be near other family members.
Survivors include a son, Paul E. Peniston III of Hartwell; and a daughter, Ellen P. Rafeedie of Atlanta; grandchildren, Thomas S. Peniston of Hollywood, Calif, Virginia P. She was a member emeritus of the Pilot Club of Washington.
