Daniel Reese McAvoy

Funeral services for Daniel Reese McAvoy, 88, of Washington, were held Saturday, August 8, 2009, in the Phillips Mill Baptist Church, Washington, with Rev. John King and Rev. Jamie Callaway officiating. Interment was in the church cemetery. He died Thursday, August 6, at his home.

Mr. McAvoy was a native of Wilkes County and the son of the late Jacob and Irene McCarthy McAvoy. He was the widower of Mildred Nunn McAvoy, who died July 31, 2009. He attended Courtground School. He always enjoyed the school children when they came to visit his farm on field trips. He was a wonderful father to his four children who loved him dearly. He was a retired farmer and was a member of Phillips Mill Baptist Church.

Survivors include a daughter and son-in-law, Dorothy and Jimmy Saxon of Carlton; three sons, Jerry McAvoy of Washington, Curtis and Linda McAvoy of Athens, and Donnie and Claudia McAvoy of Comer; a sister, Becky Hargadon of Marietta; a brother-in-law, Warren Nunn of Washington; six grandchildren; and 14 great-grandchildren.

Pallbearers included Patrick McAvoy, Billy McAvoy, Glen Gabriel, Kim Moss, Tommy McAvoy, and Doug Saxon. Great-grandchildren served as honorary pallbearers.

Hopkins Funeral Home of Washington was in charge of arrangements.
