Funeral services for Gene A. Acree, 70, of Washington were held Wednesday, October 7, 2009, at Booker's Chapel Baptist Church, Washington, with Pastor L. Dante Smith officiating. He died Friday, October 2, at his home. Interment was in the church cemetery.
Mr. Acree was a native of Wilkes County and was the fifth child of six children born to the late Archie and Mary Willie Evans Acree. He was a member of Booker's Chapel Baptist Church and was employed by Wills Memorial Hospital, Washington, for 24 years. He was employed with the United States Postal Service for 35 years and loved fishing and cooking barbecue.
Survivors include his wife, Deanna M. Acree of Washington; six children and their spouses, Johnny M. and Ann Acree, Gene Jr. and Delphine Acree, Emmanuel and Lisa Acree, Tracey Valarie Jackson (Reginald), and Cameron Acree, a grandson who was raised in the home, and Gwendolyn Elaine Harris (Ronald) of Augusta; a brother, Archie Acree Jr.; 14 grandchildren, Cameron, Angel, Antonio, Porsha Isha, Tia, Calvinshae, Tyrell, Kella, Crystal, Keon, Shawn, Rashaud, and Ramaaud; and six great-grandchildren.
Pallbearers included James Pettus, Willie R. Wingfield, Dennis Graves, John Hall, Fred Hall, and Bobby Hall. Honorary pallbearers included postal employees from Athens, Dale Worthy, Tony Daniel, Bernard Smith, and Randy Gregory. Granddaughters served as flower ladies; and postal employees from Athens served as honorary flower ladies.
McLendon Memorial Funeral Home of Washington was in charge of arrangements.
