Funeral services for Herman Lee Mauldin, 88, of Rayle were held Sunday, March 8, 2009, in County Line Baptist Church with Rev. Billy Tucker officiating. Interment was in the church cemetery. He died Thursday, March 5, at his home.
Mr. Mauldin was a native of Paulding County and was a member of County Line Baptist Church where he served as a deacon for 49 years. He was a retired truck driver.
Survivors include his wife, Maude Mansfield Mauldin, or Rayle; two daughters, Mary Mauldin Tankersley and her husband Jerry and Martha Mauldin Lawrence of Thomson; two brothers, Raymond Mauldin of Cornelia and Jack Mauldin of Washington; three grandchildren; and eight great-grandchildren.
Pallbearers included Eddie Walker, Clay Walker, Brian Bailey, Rodney Shedd, Jonnie Walker, and Bobby Walker.

Funeral services for Lucy Mae Evans, 89, of Rayle were held Saturday, March 21, 2009, at the Lyonsville Baptist Church, Rayle, with Pastor Garnie Shorter officiating. She died Saturday, March 14. Interment was in the church cemetery.
Mrs. Evans was born in Rayle to the late Rosie Lee Ector (Williams) and Willie Jordan. She and her late husband, Paul Evans, raised 12 children. She was a homemaker whose hobbies included sewing, fishing, and gardening. She was a member of the Lyonsville Baptist Church where she served on the Mother Board.
Mrs. Evans is survived by 10 of her children, Katie Childs, Rosie Foster and her husband James, Lucinda Evans, Mary and Jim Tillman, Allentown, Pa., Lila Evans of Smyrna, Jimmy Evans, Willie R. Graveside services for William R. (W.R.) Callaway, 92, of Athens, were held September 30, 2009, at Evergreen Memorial Park with Rev. Wiley Carney officiating. He died Monday, September 28, at his home.
Mr. Callaway was a native of Wilkes County, the son of the late Ruby Perkins and William R. Callaway. He was the widower of Gloria Hilda Harn Callaway. He served for many years in the U.S. Marine Corps and the U.S. Army, serving with distinction during World War II in both the European and Pacific theaters. Following his military service he worked for many years for Beechnut & Tetley Tea, selling products across Northeast Georgia. He had a passion for music and during this time formed a band, "Bill Callaway and The Counts," playing for many dances in and around Athens. He played the trombone and was the band's lead singer. He composed a number of songs and made many records during the late 1950s.
Survivors include four children, Connie Callaway Scroggs, Linda Callaway Nutter, Betty Callaway, and William R. Callaway III; seven grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; and a sister, Emily Callaway MacDonald.

Dorothy Brewton Slaton
Dorothy Brewton Slaton, 94, of Jacksonville, Fla., formerly of Washington, died October 18, 2009.
She was the oldest of three children born to Dr. J.H. and Lucille Rippard Brewton. While completing her master's degree in Athens, she rented a room from Mrs. William A. Slaton, met, fell in love with, and married her son, William Slaton Jr. Mrs. Slaton was a school teacher and was the second in charge of the Wilkes County School Board under Turner Callaway.
In 1954, the Slatons moved to Waycross where they made their home until they moved to Jacksonville, Fla. Mrs. Slaton's father-inlaw was instrumental in bringing electricity to Washington by sending a letter to President Roosevelt. He later owned the home where the Washington Historic Museum is now located.
Mrs. Slaton was preceded in death by her husband in 1997 and is survived by their only son, William A. Slaton III of Jacksonville.

Ron Fearneyougyh officiating. Interment was in the church cemetery. She died Sunday, November 15, in Wills Memorial Hospital, Washington.
Mrs. Armour was a native of Oglethorpe County and was the daughter of the late Gid N. and Beulah Coe Peterman. She was a retired secretary from Callaway Farms and had been a school teacher for 10 years. She was a member of Rock United Methodist Church.
Survivors include her husband, Marvin D. Armour of Washington; two sons and daughters-in-law, David N. and Christina Armour of Washington, and Robert "Bobby" O. and Sheila Armour of Hilton Head, S.C.; three grandchildren, Theresa Dykes, Amanda Perkins, and Sterling Armour Shealey; and four great-grandchildren, Cheyenne Burnett, Gavin Armour, Brittany Shealey, and Madison Shealey.
Pallbearers included Mark Perkins, Benjamin Dykes, Sterling Armour Shealey, Jesse Williamson, Tracy Armour, and Lee Parker. Honorary Pallbearers were Eric Hawn, Chris Lunceford, Greg Armour, Barry Armour, and Lyn Armour.

Funeral services for Darryl Albea, 66, of Tignall, were held Tuesday, July 7, 2009, in the Beulah Baptist Church with Rev. Wade Palmer officiating. Interment was in the church cemetery. He died Saturday, July 4, in Doctors Hospital, Augusta.
Mr. Albea was a native and lifelong resident of Wilkes County and was the son of the late Charles W. and Clara Bailey Albea. He served in the National Guard and was a member of Beulah Baptist Church. He was the proprietor of the Highway 17 Used Cars in Tignall.
Survivors include a sister, Phyllis Reese, Grovetown; a brother, Clint Albea, Washington; and a stepgrandson, Trey Osborne.

Funeral services for CW2 (Ret.) Roy Lee Burns, 75, of Washington will be held Thursday, August 27, 2009, at the Mt. Nebo Baptist Church. He died Thursday, August 23.
Mr. Burns was a native of Wilkes County and the son of the late Robert L. Burns and Annie Bell Tolbert. He joined the United States Army in January 1954. During his military career he served as an operator in the Special Forces (Green Beret), serving two tours of duty in Vietnam. His primary duty was with the Army Corps of Engineers. While working in the Criminal Investigation Division in the U.S. Army in Fort Gordon, Mr. Burns' military duties culminated in his service as a Military Intelligence Officer specializing in criminal investigation. After serving his country, Burns began serving God. He was called to the ministry in 1981 and served as pastor for several churches, including Mt. Calvary Baptist in Elberton, Macedonia Baptist and the New Sutton Baptist Church in Washington.
Survivors include his wife of 53 years, Addie L. Burns of Washington; five sons and their wives, CSM (Ret.) Roy L. Burns Jr., and his wife Angie of Newnan, Mayor Willie Burns and his wife Barbara of Washington; Major (Ret.) David Burns and wife Grace of Greenville, S.C., Daniel and Joyce Burns of San Antonio, Tex., and 1SG (Ret.) Lynn Burns and Desiree of Sierra Vista, Ariz; two daughters and their husbands, Nedra and Perry Snow of Sugar Hill, and SSG (Ret.) Anita Van Winkle and husband Norman of Fayetteville, N.C.; two raised in the home, Margo and Douglas Monroe of Athens, and Yvonne and Arnold Dawson of Ellenwood; a brother, Willie R. Mr. McAvoy was a native of Wilkes County and the son of the late Jacob and Irene McCarthy McAvoy. He was the widower of Mildred Nunn McAvoy, who died July 31, 2009. He attended Courtground School. He always enjoyed the school children when they came to visit his farm on field trips. He was a wonderful father to his four children who loved him dearly. Mrs. Wright was a native of Wilkes County and was the daughter of the late Samuel Hinton Dillard and Susie Smith Dillard. She was the widow of John Goode Wright. She was a beloved retired school teacher, having taught in McDuffie County, and for 33 years in Wilkes County.
Survivors include a brother, Carlton Dillard, Augusta; and several nieces and nephews. Her siblings were the late Frances Dillard Nash, Lois Dillard Houston, Helen Dillard Bradley, Jack Dillard, and Ewing Dillard.

A service of celebration for the life of Marcia Crawford Standard, 74, of Nashville, Tenn., was held Wednesday, October 14, 2009, at Calvary Methodist Church in Nashville. Graveside services were held at Mt. Hope Cemetery, Nashville. An additional memorial service will be held at 11 a.m. in Atlanta on Saturday, October 17, at Peachtree Road United Methodist Church. She died Saturday, October 10, at St. Thomas Alive Hospice after a prolonged illness.
Mrs. Standard was a native of Atlanta, and was the daughter of Logan and Bess Crawford of Atlanta. She was the widow of Dr. Henry Cooper (Mickey) Standard Jr., a native of Wilkes County. A son, Dr. Henry Cooper Standard III, is also deceased. Mrs. Standard attended Emory University in the first class of women admitted to the university. While there, as sweetheart of Chi Phi, she met and later married the fraternity's president, Henry "Mickey" Standard. After the untimely death of her husband, she obtained her Masters of School Administration, while teaching full time, and then becoming the director of admissions at The Lovett School in Atlanta. While at Lovett, she became the principal of the Lower School and founded the Pre- School. She was an active member of the National Council of Teachers of Mathematics and served on the board of the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools. She founded The Math Set LLC in Atlanta and Nashville which specializes in precisely tailoring math education to children's individual learning styles. She served on the board of Peachtree Road Methodist Church where she taught Bible studies and devoted herself to Children's Christian Education. She was fond of music and an accomplished pianist, a great cook and hostess, a loving mother and grandmother.

Funeral services for Joe Lewis Rucker, 62, of Washington were held Friday, October 23, 2009, at the Mulberry Baptist Church, Sandtown Road, Washington, with Rev. Robert Crawford and Rev. He served in the U.S. Marine Corps during the Vietnam War. After being wounded twice during two separate tours of duty, he was granted an honorable discharge as a Corporal E-4 and received two Purple Heart awards. He had worked as a printer technician for a newspaper; a mechanic/engineer for a mineral plant; and attended Athens Technical School where he received his certificate as a residential heating, air-conditioning refrigeration and electrical mechanic. He later worked for Georgia Power and Sears. He worked for the U.S. Postal Service in Washington for 27 years.
Rucker was a faithful member of the Mulberry Baptist Church where he served as chairman of the deacon board. He was a former Worshipful Master of the Shiloh Masonic Lodge #63 of Washington.

Mrs. Hopkins was a native and lifelong resident of Wilkes County and was the daughter of the late George and Kate Bailey Psalmond. She was the widow of Theodore Hopkins. She had retired from Almar Manufacturing Company and was a member of Rock United Methodist Church.

She was a member of the Washington-Wilkes Garden Club and of the Friends of the Library. She was named 1987 Wilkes County Citizen of the Year, and was named in Who's Who among American Women.
Survivors include a sister, Miss Elizabeth Reynolds of Washington; and a brother and sister-in-law, James A. and Rosemary Reynolds of Washington.

Funeral services for George Leonard Wheatley, 85, of Metasville were held Sunday, February 24, 2008, at Rehoboth Baptist Church, Metasville, with Rev. Dale Fincher and Rev. Steve Rayner officiating. Interment was in the church cemetery. He died Thursday, February 21, in the University Hospital, Augusta.
Mr. Wheatley was a native of Wilkes County and the son of the late Leonard B. Wheatley and Maude Thornton Wheatley. He was a farmer and a past member of the Wilkes County Young Farmers and Wilkes County Cattlemen's Association. He was a former director of the Washington Loan and Banking Company, Rayle EMC, and the Oglethorpe Power Corporation. Some of the awards he earned over the years include Woodman of the World Conservation Award; Future Farmers of America Honorary Chapter Farmer; Wilkes County Cattlemen's Commercial Beef Cattle Producer; Broad River Soil and Water District Farm Family of the Year; and Wilkes County Cattlemen's Environmental Stewardship Award. He served in the United States Navy during World War II and was a member of the Rehoboth Baptist Church. In his early years, he was a logger and in land clearing and pond building with Wheatley Brothers. His latter years were spent enjoying his grandchildren great-grandchildren, and raising beef cattle.
Survivors include his wife of 64 years, Sara Hopkins Wheatley; sons and daughters-in-law, George Douglas and Sandra Wheatley, Leonard Herman and Amelia Wheatley, and JoAnn Wheatley; a daughter and son-in-law, Claunette and Perry Morgan; three brothers, Stanley Wheatley, Thomas Wheatley, and Manual Wheatley; two sisters, Talitha Hopkins and Irene Raffini;nine grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren; two stepgrandchildren; and four step-greatgrandchildren.

Olin L. Lindsey
Mr. Lindsey was born August 12, 1916, in Henry County. He received his Bachelor of Science from the University of Georgia in 1939. He was an Army veteran of World War II, serving in the Pacific as a radar officer in the Signal Corps. He was a wellknown pioneer in three professions in Georgia - in forest protection as the first forest ranger in Wilkes County; in Georgia Farm Bureau Federation; and in Blue Cross/Blue Shield. While living in Columbus, he retired as Vice- President of Marketing for Blue Cross after holding that position for 22 years. He served as a deacon of Hilton Terrace Baptist Church in Columbus for many years. He taught Sunday School at the First Baptist Church, Washington, well into his 80s. He was a Kiwanian most of his adult life. He served as president of the Hazelhurst and Washington Kiwanis Clubs and was Lt. Governor for Kiwanis, Southeast Georgia. He treasured his family, and will be remembered for his love of God, devotion to his family, humble spirit, and service to others.
Survivors include his wife of 65 years, Elizabeth Granade Lindsey of Washington; two daughters and sonsin law, Betty and Herman Sifford of Baconton, and Carol Lindsey and Louis Harris of Roswell; a son and daughter-in-law, William Granade and Maureen Lindsey of Powder Springs; a brother, Raburn Lindsey of Covington; seven grandchildren, Stan Thornton, Lindsey Davis, Louis Harris Jr., Katherine McEvoy, Michael Lindsey, John Lindsey, and Christine Lindsey; and three great-grandchildren, Laura Davis, Stuart Davis, and Brooks McEvoy.

Mrs. Lindsey was born in Atlanta on October 29, 1917, and was the daughter of the late Joseph Webster and Sarah Elizabeth Camp Granade. She died five days after her husband, Olin L. Lindsey. They had been married for 65 years. Mrs. Lindsey grew up in Wilkes County and graduated from Georgia State College for Women in Milledgeville in 1942. She was an innovative and skilled educator during the "baby boom" years and retired from teaching at Johnson Elementary School in Columbus. She attended Hilton Terrace Baptist Church in Columbus and was active in many areas of church life. Retirement years were spent in Washington-Wilkes at her childhood home where she became involved in numerous civic and church activities. She was a gifted Sunday School teacher and continued to teach well into her 80s. She delighted friends and family with her gift for storytelling and her sense of humor.
Survivors include two daughters and sons-in-law, Betty and Herman Sifford of Baconton, and Carol Lindsey and Louise Harris of Roswell; a son and daughter-in-law, William Granade and Maureen Lindsey of Powder Springs; a sister, Vivian Granade Wickersham of Washington; seven grandchildren, Stan Thornton, Lindsey Davis, Louis Harris Jr., Katherine McEvoy, Michael Lindsey, John Lindsey, and Christine Lindsey; and three greatgrandchildren, Laura Davis, Stuart Davis, and Brooks McEvoy.

Virginia Peniston
Mrs. Peniston was born in Montezuma, and was the daughter of the late McLendon Sherwood DeVaughn and Anne Elizabeth Sims DeVaughn. Her grandparents were James Elijah DeVaughn and Sarah Virginia McLendon DeVaughn of Montezuma, and Marshall Mercer Sims and Mary Miranda Robert of "The Cedars" in Washington- Wilkes. On her first trip away from family and friends after graduating from high school she attended the Julliard School of Music in New York City. After her marriage to Thomas Jackson Peniston in 1928, they lived in Atlanta for 40 years. While living in Atlanta she was a charter member of the First Piano Duet Club of Atlanta, the 1904 Study Club, Four Seasons Garden Club, and was an officer for several years in the Rabun Gap Nacoochee Guild. She enjoyed genealogy and was a member of the James Edward Oglethorpe Daughters of American Colonists, Daughters of Colonial Wars, the Huguenot Society, State Regent of the Colonial Dames XVII Century, Descendants Knights of the Garter, Magna Charta Dames, and past Regent of Joseph Habersham Chapter DAR. After her husband's death in 1964, she moved back to Washington to help her mother, "Sister Bess," until her death in 1975. She was a member of the Kettle Creek Chapter DAR and the Iris Garden Club. She was named Washington Rotary Club Citizen of the Year for 1977-78 for serving as chairman of the Wilkes County Beautification Campaign which won a national award. She moved to Atlanta in 2000 to be near other family members.

Funeral services for William "Bill" E. Niemann, MSgt., USAF, Retired, of Washington were held Tuesday, April 10, 2007, at the First United Methodist Church, Washington, with Rev. Gale Seibert officiating. Interment was in Resthaven Cemetery with full military honors. He died April 5.
Mr. Niemann grew up in Lincolnton where he was a Boy Scout and attained the rank of Eagle Scout. He was an adult leader from age 20 to 45, serving as Scoutmaster in Germany, Mississippi, Texas, Illinois, Okinawa, Michigan and Montana. After retiring in 1981, he was the Scoutmaster for Troop 34 in Washington. He joined the United States Air Force in the summer of 1960. During his years of serving his country he received the Presidential Unit Citation; the Air Force Commendation Medal three times; and the Vietnam Service Medal. He graduated from the NCO Academy at Maxwell AFB, Ala., and was named NCO of the year in 1977 and NCO of the quarter at several installations. He earned an associate degree from the Community College of the Air Force. Mr. Niemann was a member of the Kiwanis Club of Washington and was named Kiwanian of the Year in 1984-85. He was a Master Mason of LaFayette Lodge 23, F&AM, and a Shriner. He was a member of the First United Methodist Church of Washington and president of the W&L Model Railroad Club.
Survivors include his wife, Pat Ward Niemann of Washington; three children, William Edward Niemann II of Powder Springs, Cynthia Niemann Long, Washington, and Lynn Niemann Young, Thomson; a brother, Chet Niemann of Deland, Fla.; a sister, Dianne Thomson of Lincolnton; and six grandchildren.

He had retired as owner/manager of Wilkes Loan and Insurance Co. of Washington. He was a member of the Board of Directors of the Farmers and Merchants Bank in Washington, and a member of the Wills Memorial Hospital Authority. He was a member of the Lions Club.
Survivors include his wife, Bobbie Ann Griffin of Washington; three daughters and their husbands, Rhonda and Johnny Newberry, Joanna and Wade Waller, and Dawn and Steven Pickens, all of Washington; three grandchildren, Grif Newberry, Wesley Waller, and Jacob Waller; and two sisters, Eva Burdette of Washington and Bettye Duke of Louisville, Ky.

On discharge from the USAF he studied electric engineering, power option, at Washington State College, Pullman, Washington, receiving his BSEE in 1953. He worked for Westinghouse Electric Company for more than 38 years.

Asa Monroe Bennett
Graveside services for Asa Monroe Bennett, 93, of Washington, were held Monday, October 9, 2006, at Resthaven Cemetery, Washington. He died Friday, October 6, at his home.
Mr. Bennett was a native of Wilkes County and was the son of the late Nathan Robert and Mattie (Woodruff) Bennett. His wife, the late Annie Leila Wells Bennett, died in 1999. As a youth in Wilkes County, Mr. Bennett attended Big Cedar School and graduated from Washington High School. He received a bachelor's degree in agriculture from the University of Georgia in 1935, having earned his tuition and board in the Depression years by creating a laundry pick-up and delivery service for college students living in dormitories.
After a brief period of working as an agricultural agent for the Atlantic Coast Railroad, Mr. Bennett returned to Wilkes County to buy land and work as a farmer, raising Hereford cattle and planting extensive acreage in trees for lumber. He also owned the Bennett Manufacturing Co., which manufactured Go-Karts from 1963 to 1977. He was a longtime member of the First United Methodist Church in Washington.
Survivors include a son, Asa William (Bill) Bennett of Washington; two daughters, Mary Ann Hawkins of Morrow, and Joyce B. Crouch of Amherst, MA; five grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren.

Graveside services for Elizabeth Penelope Wills, 99, of Liberty Street, Washington, were held Wednesday, July 5, 2006, in Resthaven Cemetery, Washington, with Rev. Albert W. Huyck Jr. officiating. She died Monday, July 3, at her home.
Miss Wills - "Nep," as she was affectionately called - was a native of Wilkes County and was the daughter of the late Dr. Thomas Jackson Wills and Susie Wingfield Wills. She was a faithful member of the First Baptist Church, Washington, where she was a member of the Mary C. Reid Women On Mission, and of the TEL Sunday School Class. She was a graduate of Shorter College where she was an avid basketball player. She taught math and French and coached basketball at Hartwell for several years before deciding to change careers. After certification as a laboratory technician at Grady Hospital in Atlanta, she remained employed there until her return to Washington General Hospital and then Wills Memorial Hospital as a laboratory technician, retiring at the age of 80. At the time of her death she had been under the special care of Dr. C.E. Wills and her great-niece and namesake, Penelope (Penny) Freeman Callaway.
Survivors include two nephews, Dr. Charles Wills of Washington and Reid Wills of Birmingham, Ala.; and a niece, Janet Wills Argroves, Savannah.
Great-great-nephews served as pallbearers and included Rick Callaway, Jason Callaway, Cary Callaway, Brad Wills, Scott Wills, and Kent Burgess. The remaining greatgreat nephews served as honorary pallbearers.

Graveside services for Dorothy Stripling Dunford, 88, of Lincolnton, formerly of Washington, were held Tuesday, June 27, 2006, at Resthaven Cemetery, Washington, with Rev. Albert W. Huyck Jr. and Rev. Dan Rosser officiating. She died Saturday, June 24, at her home.

She owned her own business called "Dolls on Alexander," and was well-known for her porcelain dolls. She was the widow of Jim Dunford and was the daughter of the late Emmitt Stripling and Stella White Stripling. She was a member of the Lincolnton Baptist Church.
Survivors include four daughters, Dottie Arnette and her husband Robert of Kingstree, S.C., Mary Dunford, Lincolnton, Jamie Reese and her husband Jack of Lincolnton, and Betsy Barnett and her husband Jimmy of Washington; eight grandchildren; and three greatgrandchildren.

A service was held on Sunday afternoon, May 28, 2006, at Resthaven Cemetery, Washington, to inter the ashes of W.T. (Billy) Verran and Elizabeth Warren (Wush) Ware.
Family members attended the service conducted by Rev. Bob Murphy of Bishop on the Ware square in the cemetery.
Mrs. Ware is the sister of Mabel Ware Johnson of WashingtonWilkes and grew up here. Major Verran is a former band director of the Washington High School Band. The Wares made their home in Cairo for many years where he was band director and she taught piano.
