William R. Callaway

Graveside services for William R. (W.R.) Callaway, 92, of Athens, were held September 30, 2009, at Evergreen Memorial Park with Rev. Wiley Carney officiating. He died Monday, September 28, at his home.

Mr. Callaway was a native of Wilkes County, the son of the late Ruby Perkins and William R. Callaway. He was the widower of Gloria Hilda Harn Callaway. He served for many years in the U.S. Marine Corps and the U.S. Army, serving with distinction during World War II in both the European and Pacific theaters. Following his military service he worked for many years for Beechnut & Tetley Tea, selling products across Northeast Georgia. He had a passion for music and during this time formed a band, "Bill Callaway and The Counts," playing for many dances in and around Athens. He played the trombone and was the band's lead singer. He composed a number of songs and made many records during the late 1950s.

Survivors include four children, Connie Callaway Scroggs, Linda Callaway Nutter, Betty Callaway, and William R. Callaway III; seven grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; and a sister, Emily Callaway MacDonald.

Memorial contributions may be made to the USO in support of our troops.

Lord and Stephens, East, was in charge of arrangements.
